Im also cross-registering there and taking two Harvard classes this term with my friend Nina 10, so while my collar isnt physically popped, its been feeling pretty starchy as of late. Going to Harvard as a MIT student can sometimes make you feel like the only boy at Wellesley. You can easily pick me out of a crowd, rocking ratty untied Chuck Taylors and an MIT Orientation Leader 2006 shirt, wondering where the heck the building numbers are and why my recitation (scuse me, section) is in a place called Malinckrodt. (I wasnt an Orientation Leader in 2006, obviously, because I was getting oriented. The t-shirts were free in a box outside 7-103.) Amongst a sea of generally well-dressed, well-groomed and well-mannered Ivy Leaguers, my knotted, unwashed mane that serves as home to many a transgenic fruit fly and is slightly remniscent of Amy Winehouse sticks out like Im wearing a Tim the Beaver suit. Nina also was the one to convince me of how easy it was to cross-register, since she had a pretty good experience taking Chemistry 17 last term. In fact, its pretty much just like registering for normal MIT classes you have a separate form that needs to be signed by the Harvard professor, your advisor, and the director of the HASS (Humanities, Arts and Social Science) office, which then gets turned in to both the MIT HASS office and the Harvard registrar. No more than half of your classes can be Harvard classes, and you must be a full-time MIT student to cross-register (paying full MIT tuition, which you kind of have to do anyway if youre taking MIT classes). So about four times a week now, I take the T or the 1 Bus to Harv, which means I have to factor at least 10-15 minutes travel time into my morning routine of sprinting out the door with a Go-Gurt (portable breakfast food FTW). As easy as it was to register and as easy as it is to get there, though, at times it can feel like Im studying abroad. There are cross-cultural differences aplenty and a definite language barrier 5.13 becomes Chem 27 and Course 5 itself is now Chemistry and Chemical Biology; teaching aides are no longer TAs but TFs (teaching fellows); and of course theres the whole dressing up for class thing. (I guess over there they just call it getting dressed.) Dont get me wrong Im definitely glad to be taking advantage of this opportunity, and I enjoy the mixed experience. But I can honestly say, and I think Nina will agree with me on this one, that there is no greater feeling than getting off the bus at the end of the day and stepping back onto MIT ground. Theres nothing better than knowing that youve returned somewhere where you can punt your 7.03 p-set all day to code a wiki for Burton 1, and you can tell someone that, and they will know exactly what you mean. Basically theres no place like home, like in The Wizard of Oz. (Or not, like in Poltergeist.) My schedule, if youre wondering, consists of: Stat 100, a Harvard class that fulfills a Course 9 requirement (in place of 9.07, Statistics for Brain and Cognitive Science). Its probably one of the easier classes on the Harvard spectrum, seeing as every exam is open notes/open book. When I heard that my jaw just about unhinged and crawled away. Nina was like, Welcome to Harv. Chem 27, my other Harvard class, is sort of a weird amalgamation of 5.13, 7.05, and 5.310 (or I guess 5.36, since the lab is a little more geared towards organic reactions). Thats Organic Chemistry II, Biochemestry, and a chem lab; so there isnt really any class like this offered at MIT (of couse, Harvard doesnt really offer 5.13 or 5.310 either, and so because MIT splits them into two classes theyre taught really differently). Twice a week we have an hour and a half of lecture; once a week we have one section (recitation), and one five-hour lab (most MIT lab classes meet twice a week for five hours, and once for a one-hour lecture). This also means I am blessed with the glory of Tuesdays, in which I get up at 7 to bus over to Harvard for a five hour lab, hightail it back to MIT for my attendance-mandatory Japanese class, sit through another hour and a half lecture of 9.00, then bus BACK over to Harvard for Chem 27 section. By Tuesday night I can usually be found limping, battered an d bruised, back to Burton-Conner, sometimes with bits of an unknown organic acid in my hair. Chem 27, if youre wondering, is definitely one of the harder classes on the Harvard spectrum. Exams are pretty close to what Im used to at MIT, and lectures contain all sorts of gems like the glucosidase inhibitor deoxynojirimycin. (I remain unconvinced that deoxynojirimycin is an actual word. Im still waiting for the professor to announce, By the way, you remember that glucosidase inhibitor I told you about the other day? Deoxynojirimycin? I actually just fell asleep on my keyboard when I was writing the lecture slides, so uh, thats not real. Hahaha.) 21F.502, or Japanese 2. A lot harder than Japanese 1. One similarity between MIT and Harvard languages in college are definitely not like languages in high school. Yeah, they start you off with domo arigatou and all the basics, but its a lot faster paced, and from day one they speak rapid Japanese at you (same as when I took French for one week, and Chinese for one week). Weve all sort of gotten used to it now, but on the first day everyone was like, er, this is Japanese 1, right? 9.00, or Introduction to Psychology. Professor Gabrieli is not only one of the more interesting lecturers Ive had, but I also just started working in his lab this IAP. Rather than your average introduction psych course that sticks mostly to Freud and thinking really hard about your feelings, 9.00 has more of neuroanatomical applications i.e. in yesterdays lecture, where we discussed the limitations of the lateral geniculate nucleus in visual processing. He also starts every class with a song from his iTunes playlist; todays gem was Youve Got My Attention by Copeland. And, theres also my UROP, which Im doing for credit (as opposed to for pay, or volunteer). I get to write programs for people to look at while theyre in the MRI, and sometimes in lecture Professor Gabrieli talks about what Im working on and I get all excited and My Friend Matt Cohen is all like, nobody thinks thats cool but you. Here is something cool, though the girl who works next to me is Nupur Lala, the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion and star of the documentary Spellbound. The thing is, they probably should have never told me that she was the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion. Because now anytime she does anything, like ask for programming help, I think to myself, The 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion just asked for programming help. Windfall Profits Tax: My Opinion Many people today are angry about the price of gas. According to the Energy Information Administration, gas prices in the United States are hovering right around $4.00 per gallon (Energy). Their website indicates that this is an increase of more than $1.00 per gallon since this same time last year. Most people think that oil companies are charging much more than they should be for oil products and raking in offensive amounts of profits. I agree with their opinion. In 2007, ExxonMobil delivered a record $40.6 billion in net income (ExxonMobile, pg 2). In my opinion, making record profits like this in a time when people are really struggling to make ends meet is obscene. One solution that has been mentioned to make oil companies lower their profits and help make oil products more affordable for people in the United States is a windfall profits tax. A windfall profits tax is a tax that is imposed on a company that makes an extravagant profit in a short period of time (Windfall). This sounds like a good idea at first glance, but on closer inspection, some big problems become very apparent. First, there is no set amount of tax that should be applied. Second, there is also no agreement on how much is considered extravagant and in what amount of time. It all seems to be a matter of opinion. It is not fair to impose this tax on a company or industry just because some people do not agree with how much the company or industry is earning and not have some guidelines in place that would make this tax applicable to all companies that earn a certain amount in a certain time period. Right now, we cannot reduce our demand for oil products enough to make the oil companies lower their prices. The oil companies know this and know that if they are forced to pay a large amount of tax on their profits, they can always raise the price on their products to cover this extra cost. This windfall profits tax probably would just make the problem worse. While I do agree that oil companies need to reign in their profits, I do not agree with imposing a windfall profits tax to make them do this. Yes, the government would receive more tax revenues and this could possibly be passed back to the American people in the form of stimulus checks or another type of tax break. Yes, it would decrease the amount of profits that the oil companies such as ExxonMobil would be able to make. These positives make a windfall profits tax seem like a positive thing, but the backlash from the oil companies could make the situation worse. By levying this new tax on oil companies, we could make the price of oil products rise not just here, but possibly around the world. This price increase would make the everyday cost of getting to work, running a business, or shipping food to starving people in refugee camps around the world too high for many people here and overseas. A better and farther reaching alternative to a windfall profits tax would be to decrease our demand for oil. In economics, the Law of Supply and Demand states that when supply exceeds demand, sellers must lower prices to stimulate sales (Microsoft). If we can develop technology that will allow us to power our homes, vehicles, and businesses without using oil products, we would reduce our demand for oil enough to make oil companies lower their prices. This would also help our environment become cleaner and in turn help people live a more healthy life. This technology exists. Now it seems, as we advance on scientific frontiers, the new quest of the heavens is to find and explain the phenomenom known as a black hole. The goal of this paper is to explain how the concept of a black hole came about, and give some insight on how black holes are formed and might be tracked down in our more technologically advanced future. Gaining an understanding of a black hole allows for a greater understanding of the concept of spacetime and maybe give us a grasp of both science fiction and science fact. Hopefully, all the clarification will come by the close of this essay. A black hole is probably one of the most misunderstood ideas among people outside of the astronomical and physical communities. Before an understanding of how it is formed can take place, a bit of an introduction to stars is necessary. This will shed light (no pun intended) on the black hole philosophy. A star is an enormous fire ball, fueled by a nuclear reaction at its core which produces massive amounts of heat and pressure. It is formed when two or more enormous gaseous clouds come together which forms the core, and as an aftereffect the conversion, due to that impact, of huge amounts of energy from the two clouds. The clouds come together with a great enough force, that a nuclear reaction ensues. This type of energy is created by fusion wherein the atoms are forced together to form a new one. In turn, heat in excess of millions of degrees farenheit are produced. This activity goes on for eons until the point at which the nuclear fuel is exhausted. Here is where things get interesting. For the entire life of the star, the nuclear reaction at its core produced an enormous outward force. Interestingly enough, an exactly equal force, namely gravity, was pushing inward toward the center. The equilibrium of the two forces allowed the star to maintain its shape and not break away nor collapse. Eventually, the fuel for the star runs out, and it this point, the outward force is overpowered by the gravitational force, and the object caves in on itself. This is a gigantic implosion. Depending on the original and final mass of the star, several things might occur. A usual result of such an implosion is a star known as a white dwarf. This star has been pressed together to form a much more massive object. It is said that a teaspoon of matter off a white dwarf would weigh 2-4 tons. Upon the first discovery of a white dwarf, a debate arose as to how far a star can collapse. And in the 1920s two leading astrophysicists, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekgar and Sir Arthur Eddington came up with different conclusions. Chandrasekhar looked at the relations of mass to radius of the star, and concluded an upper limit beyond which collapse would result in something called a neutron star. This limit of 1.4 solar masses was an accurate measurement and in 1983, the Nobel committee recognized his work and awarded him their prize in Physics. The white dwarf is massive, but not as massive as the next order of imploded star known as a neutron star. Often as the nuclear fuel is burned out, the star will begin to shed its matter in an explosion called a supernovae. Despite the fact that the primacy of equity was reaffirmed in the Supreme Court Act 19814 s 49 (1), (2), Lord Diplock took the view that: Lord Browne-Wilkinson said in Tinsley v Milligan [1994]6 that English law was now a single law which was made up of legal and equitable interests, and a person owning either type of estate had a right of property amounting to a right in rem not merely a right in personam. Lord Denning was a proponent of the view that law and equity had fused for both administrative and practical purposes. The Cherokee Victory   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Cherokee Indians, the most cooperative and accommodating to the political institutions of the united states, suffered the worst fate of all Native Americans when voluntarily or forcibly moved west. In 1827 the Cherokees attempted to claim themselves as an independent nation within the state of Georgia. When the legislature of the state extended jurisdiction over this ‘nation,’ the Cherokees sought legal actions, not subject to Georgia laws and petitioned the United States Supreme Court. The case became known as Cherokee Nation vs. Georgia in 1831. Supreme Court Justice John Marshall denied their claim as a republic within Georgia, he then deemed the Cherokee as a ‘domestic dependent nation’. One year later through the case of Worcester vs. Georgia, the Cherokee’s were granted federal protection from the molestation by the state of Georgia. Through the Indian Removal act in 1830 President Andrew Jackson appropriated planning and funding for the removal of Native Americans, Marshall’s rulings delayed this for the Cherokee Nation, and infuriated President Jackson. Marshall’s decision had little effect on Jackson and ignoring this action the president was anxious to see him enforce it. The federal government proceeded to find a way around this decision and had three minor Cherokee chief’s sign the â€Å"Treaty of New Echota† in 1835 giving the Cherokee lands to the government for 5.6 million dollars and free passage west. Congress got the treaty ratified by only one vote. Members of their tribes murdered all three chiefs who took part in the signing of the treaty. After this event there was not much the Cherokee’s could do and were forcibly moved west on what they called and are known today as the ‘Trail of Tears,’ which became a constitutional crisis in our history. In this instance the lack of cooperation between the branches of the government was the downfall for the Cherokee nation. The way the Cherokee’s were forced west caused losses of up to twenty percent of the nation. This figure is only a guess and scholar’s think it was more a third of the nation was lost. The ‘Trail of Tears’ was also a moral e issue in the United States, later having an impact on our history the way other Native American races in general are treated in the future. Harrah's Entertainment Inc. Philip G. Satre, CEO of Harrah's Entertainment Inc. , had steered the company to a new direction and created a new competitive advantage for the company. In 1998, Gary Loveman joined Harrah's as chief operating officer (COO) and helped the company to change from operations-driven company that had its properties operate as â€Å"standalone business,† to a marketing-driven company that focused on the target customers and build loyalty under Harrah's brand. By December 1999, Harrah's had 50% growth in revenue and 100% growth in stock price and profits, which the results were significantly better than the industry. However, Satre had two questions for Gary Loveman and his team. He wanted to know how much percentage of the marketing dollars was accounted for this success and was these marketing efforts sustainable. Phillip Satre became CEO of Harrah's Entertainment Inc. in 1984. His first sustainable competitive advantage was to focus on customer. The first CRM system was the Winner's Information Network, which collected and analyzed data based on customers' play. The strategy was a success until mid 1990s when there were more competitors entered the market with better and flashier properties. The company launched the Total Gold program in fall 1997, which focused more on increasing customer royalty. After Gary Loveman joined the company in 1998, the data he analyzed was showed that customers had little loyalty to the company, so the company's main focus was to increase customers' loyalty. In order to succeed, Loveman introduced three major plans: changing the organization structure/ building the Harrah's brand, delivering extraordinary service, and exploiting relationship marketing opportunities. The new CRM was recreated and consisted of two components: Database Marketing (DBM) and the Total Gold Program. DBM could precisely predict â€Å"customer worth† – how much the casino expected to win from a customer. This system helped Harrah's to identify its potential great customers. It also helped Harrah's to develop customer centric approach to direct marketing, which comprised 3 phases to a customer relationship: new business, loyal and retention. The Total Gold Program was created to assist and support the cross-market visitation patterns of the customers. The Total Gold Program increased Harrah's cross-market revenues from 13% in 1997 to 23% in 2000. It also helped Harrah to create true royalty program which motivated customers to set goals and explained clearly for how to achieve them. Harrah's main focus was to increase customers' loyalty, so the metrics that could be used to assess its performance were customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. As far as how much percentage of the marketing efforts had contributed to the overall performance which could be measured by using return on investment metric. This competitive advantage probably sustained until the competitors introduced similar programs, which Harrah's might have to come up with new innovations. However, Harrah's had excelled in customer intimacy and also did very well in product leadership, which put Harrah's in better position than its competitors.
